Ben Nevis en Francaise !

I was on the Ben with a large team from France. Luckily Tom Parkin was at the head with fluent french. Very nice weather indeed the day started wet and if the forecast was to be believed that's the way it should have been for most of the day but it cleared to a very nice day. The north side is looking like the end of play a big hole at the start of smiths and water can be heard running. All the easy gully's are full and will be for some time.
Things are still snowy I heard from Gillian Culshaw who had hooked up with my Dad who is doing some work in Chamonix they did a tour from the Midi to the Entevers col and down the Valle Blanche which sounded good.

Rock Climbing 2009

With some snow on the hills but a definate feel of the end of the winter season its time to start the rock climbing courses. We are offering a full range of courses this summer from scrambling to multi pitch rock climbs.
We operate in the Scottish Highlands and also the Lake district. We are offering scrambling courses that can take place in areas such as Glen Coe, Ben Nevis, Cairngorms and also the Cuilin on the Isle of Skye.
Rock climbing intro days aimed at getting people introduced to the sport and a good way to get to grips with the basics such as belaying, movement on rock and tying essential knots.
Learn to lead courses. We teach the important skills needed to lead climb with traditionally placed protection.
Rescue courses where we break the rope work down to look at different ways to get out of a pickle.
Please feel free to get in contact if you have any ideas or plans you would like to chat through with us dan@mountainplan.com
All our courses are tailor made and in the area that you choose and are down to the dates you choose.

Shiegra

With the end of winter its time to head for the rock especially as the weather turns nice. The west coast usually has a good spell of high pressures at this time of year before the midge arrives. Donald and I headed North West for a long way till we got as far as Shiegra, slightly above Kinlochburvie. This area has a large collection of Lewisien Gneiss 'Geo's (inlets, coves). We had a great weather, I opted for the bivvy experience where as Donald went with a tent given the clear skies and cold airflow my choice was a regrettable one !!!!

Spring Rock

Things are very warm and becoming springlike, I had a quick stretch with Donald at Duntelchaig. Things will be getting warm and soft on the Ben looking up there today there is snow and ice and with a cooling in the weather will leave some ice high up that should be climable this weekend. Watch out for falling ice and cornices.
The summer courses are now taking bookings with the winter drawing to a close. Feel free to get in touch with regard to courses and availability. Have a look here for further details on the summer courses

The Skiing was shut with only the goose looking to be the run intact!

Ben Nevis

I was winter skills'ing on the Ben today. It was a stunning day with blue skies and sunshine, bit windy though! We headed up Observatory before heading round to Coire Leis. We where nearly the only ones there one team was on Smiths and one on Tower ridge. The ice on Smiths looked good as did Tower Scoop. All the easy gully's are full and firming up with the clear nights.

Ben Nevis

I was on the Ben today with Tante, we headed up looking at some skills along the way before heading into Observatory gully and heading up Tower Gully. The snow was pretty soft but firmed up the higher you went. A few teams out, a team from Outward Bound where on Point 5 and had a good day, Tower Scoop was busy. In the Ciste I saw a team on Comb gully, Number 3 gully buttress and Ledge route. Could do with a freeze but still winter on the Ben.

Intro Rock, Kingussie

I was out with Tante today. We headed east to find the drier weather and found ourselves at Kingussie crags, this has a good selection of low to mid grade routes. Looking across to the Cairngorms it was evident that lots of snow has been falling....... prehaps keep the axes handy!

Duntelchaig

Alpine ski

For those still wishing to head to the Alps there is plenty of snow out there and late season ski action should be great. These are from Donald who was out in Obergurgle last week. Another friend who was touring in the Silvretta area of Austria was commenting in an email on lots of concerning avalanche conditions for his report on the area have a look at Robs site, Highland Guides.

Ben Nevis

A few shots of the crags on the Ben today. Teams on Point 5, Tower Scoop, Gardayloo, Tower ridge. On the Ciste side lots of folk in the easy gully's and Ledge route. Looked to be a fair amount of ice on the Cascade. Snow was pretty soft underfoot though.
